Logo

For my magazine I have choosen to call it "Antique" the reason for calling this magzine antique is that you refere to antique to something old and im doing a old school R&B magzine so it fits in well with the genere and the age of the magzine as the magzine is about the old R&B aritst. You also reffere to the word "antiquie of something that was big back in the day and everyone has forgotten about so this word links in welll with magzine so it fits the age genere and type of magzine I am creating.

The first deign for the logo of my magzine I have tried to use a theme through out which is a retro old school look for the fonts. I thought that this one would fit in well with the old school look as the shapes of the letter sgive it a look you would see back inthe 90s whihc would fit in well with the magzine. The colour scheme of black adn white to show strong contrast of colours to make bits of the logo stand out I also liked with the fine white line inbewteen the two blacks makes the black lettering really stand out and eye cathing to the audience. I dont particular like the style of font the was its all in bold doesnt fit in with the name of the logo "antiquie" as when you think of that word you expect to see more soft and handwritten font. For the finally deign I most probably would pick this wont as it doesnt relate to the logo meaning "antiquie" just a little to mordern forwhat Im looking for.

Thie second deisgn for my magzine front cover logo I stuck with the theme of retro hich I think this logo fits in well with as you have half black and half white font whihc is giving it a different and unquie appeal to the font whihc fits in well with the magzine im going to create. I also think the font type in bold is very retron with the sqaure edges whihc gives it that look and feel whihc i think the audeince will like and feel when they see the font. I think I will consider using this for my final deisgn as its big stand outs so be eye catching to the audience whihc I want the consumer to seeand notice.

I think the style and the look of this logo lookes suitable for my magzine cover as its retro and oldschool as the texture of the logo looks like its been coloured with a pencil whihc gives it that oldschool look whihc links in well with my magzine and shall catch my audeince eye when seen. I also think it being in a large font and also in bold makes it stand out I also think that it will appeal to a large target audeince as a lot of age groups. The black out line around the font makes it look bold and emphasises the letter whihc will make people more attracted the logo.

This font I think really fits in with the magzine and the meaning of the word antquie as the font type is very retro and oldschool whihc youn would see back in the 90s whihc I am trying to persive. The font type looks handwritten so it lloiks retro and also looks eye ctaching and appealing to the traget audience who will be looking at the magzine, The curls within the written also gives it that oldschool look which shows and gives it that elgiant look to the font as well. I also think that the black font on its owns isnt to much for the eye to take in so I would think its very appealing for the audeince. I als o think that the black thick line underneath really draws your eye to the font and catches the audeince attention, I also think the line links in well with the 90s oldschool look as this is what they used back in there time. I think this would be a diefante yes for my finally logo as ithas all the techniques that link into the word "antique and looks great and would fit in really well with the magzine genere and age

This logo I think looks a bit like a baseball type of font which will link to a lot of amercans so people form different nations will be able to link in with the magzine. I also lie the black and white contarst of the letter whihc is very effective and appealing to large tyarget audeince whihc im trying to get across. I think the large lettering font also makes it more visble and clear for the consumer to read and remeber the logo on the magzine as i will wont them to be buying the magzine more so it grows. I will deifnatly think about using this font for my final design and get an adueince responds to the font type to see if they like it.

This final logo design gives the feel of the magzine being a bit rough and mess as the logo has lines on the "A" AND THE "E" that are slanted whihc give the logo this feel. The lgo is like the others all black and white so quiet dull and boring but the white makes the black stand out and seem more visble and appealing. The lettering gives a retro feel and makes it feel oldschool whihc will link into the magazine and will appeal to the taregt audeince whihc im trying to aim these logos at. I dont think I will use this font type for my final design as it isnt as unquie and different compared to some of the other fonts I have made up.

Well done Dan,
Sum up all you have learnt from your research and how this is going to inform the decisions you make with planning. And I agree with Mrs S- it is important you are clear as to what genre of music you are going to do a magazine for; ideally it should link to the RMA's you analysed or be based on other results of research. If you do not do an Indie/Rock, you may want to look at RNB mags as the codes and conventions are quite different really.

Product Placement

From my questionnaire results where I will be selling my magazine will be in a local store such as tesco, sainsburys, asada or even a Conor shop any where that is near for the consumer to buy the magazine which must be a local store which I have found out from my questionnaire. Then if i was to choose a completely different place it would be a store that it most popular either WhSmiths or HMV as they are both big stores that people would go to look for music magazines the last place I would to advertise it to be sold would be online from my questionnaire results I found that it Would be the least preferred place to buy a music magazine.
From my questionnaire I have found that that there is a gap in the market for a R&B magazine I think as of today's modern music all you hear about is the new R&B artist and bands I think there is a market and a gap in the market for a R&B magazine of the old R&B artist the artist that first invented R&B I think I will be aiming this magazine at 10 to 30 year old to get a big range of ages to appeal to the magazine to make it more appealing. It will also be aimed at both male and female so there will be a range of different things to read and see within the magazine.

Double page spread:

In the double page spread there are a variety of images which are placed around the page to make the page more appealing and give it something to look at visually. The main picture which is centered on the right hand side of the page, you can clearly see its the main thing on the page as its large so its eye catching to the audience. The picture is obviously a band due to the amount of people in the photo it is the tour line up made for a terrible church choir. They are all wearing variety of different clothing's as they are all there individual people that's why they are all dressed differently to have there own unique appearance. As they look quiet rock looking non of them are wearing any make up showing they don't really care about there appearance and there probably more interested in the music to care about make up. The shot is a long shot so they can fit everyone in the picture and placed them behind the background of the Kerrang wall which shows who is sponsoring them so they can be advertised a long with the magazine logo to also promote themselves. The way these artist in the image represent the target audience is its aimed at people who like rock and indie music you can tell this by the clothes they are wearing which links into the audience which is most probably what they wear as they look up to these people and want to look like them. In the picture they have taken the picture as if there all their own character to show that they are wild free and there won person there not covered up to be someone there not which I think links well into the magazine.

There are some captions on this double page spread such as on the small pictures which you can find on both pages of the double page spread there is a little captions which tells you what is going on within the picture and why its there. They obviously must relate to the article which is on the double page spread, so it gives you some information on what maybe the article is about so it pulls you in and make you want to read more of the article . Then finally it tells you about the picture because maybe you don't understand the picture so the captions tries to give you information to make you realise why they have put the picture to make you understand why they have put it there

The reason for the drop caps on this double page spread is that it catches the readers eye so they fouces on the letter so it catches there attention so they instantly start to read the article. It also depends on the colour scheme but for example the drop cap on this page suits the colour scheme of the magazine.

The column alignment within this double page spread ordered from the left hand page and then moves over to the right hand side of the page is goes around the the main picture on the page and another pictures or captions on the double page spread it also goes around them so that you can see clearly where the text is so you can see clearly where everything on the page is so its organized quiet well.

The colours which are used within the double page spread are the colour scheme for Kerrang! there is white for the background Worth the black font for the article so that the font stands out so there is a strong contrast. You also have this red and Orange squares that are just randomly put behind the picture probably to littens the page up and make it more exciting as the colours look like there is a explosions which fits in well with the magazine. The you have the big font which is in black which stands out as its bold and in your face so you instantly look at it when you first see the double page spread. All the colours are used in a way either to make parts stand out more, to add more colour to the page to make it more exciting or even just to go with the colour scheme.

The house style within this double page spread I don't think really likens to the front cover as most double page spread normally do but this one has different colour scheme and is a lot more vibrant the front cover is just mainly one of many colours. The only think I can think how this relates to the front cover is that the logo is the same and they have a lot of black red and white colours which also links in with the magazine.

I also found that the language within the article is very eye catching and makes you want to read more with cliffhangers so you wont to know what Carry's on after that cliff hanger such as this one "with the party in full swing, K! went backstage to find out..." that quote instantly wants you to carry on reading which makes you read the article so the double page spread isn't very relieving it makes you have to read deeper into the magazine to find out what they are talking about.

From Mrs S

Good stuff Dan, lots of detail here, one thing you might want to add: do all the things you've noted about the magazine suit the genre of the music that the mag's about?

Contents Page

The style of this magazine contents page of Kerrang! is laid out quiet basic so its quick and easy to read and find certain pages clearly on the right hand side of the page you have the page numbers with brief information to let you know what you can see or find on that certain page . Then on the left of that you have a promotion which is promoting a band by pretty much saying if you enter the competition you can go to there gig and meet the band. Then clearly at the top you have the magazine logo with the issue no and the cover data this information is letting you know its the lastly magazine and has been issued. The design is very rock by the picture of the band which is a long shot to get there full appearance in of what they look like you can tell instantly by the tattoos the long wacky hair the chains and leather clothing what the magazine target audience is and what to expect. Also the colours that are used within the contents page are quiet rock with the yellows black and reds all associate with rock colours such as black is the main colour that resembles rock so that's probably why they have chosen the colours to fit in with the theme and culture. The font on the contents page is quiet rough looking which gives that rock feel to the page.

The language which is used in this magazine article is very snappy and formal tyring to catch your attention straight away to make you want to read more of what is inside the magazine. They do this by giving you bits of the article which are probably the most interesting and important and they leave it on a cliffhanger. or even by having a puns in a short bit of information to make you think why have they put that in? They will try and do anything to attract your attention to try and make you read the magazine .

The colours that are used in these contents page are very strong and contrasting colours such as the black strips are eye catching because its a strong colour that draws you eyes to what they want you to see along with that they have the page number going down the side in red to make sure that they stand out so its not hard to find them as if they were in black with all the over font it wouldn't stand out and catch your attention. They also have the main topics in sections to make these stand out on the black strip they have put the font on top in yellow which is a strong contrast of colours which makes the yellow stand out and catches the eye to make you focuses on that part of the magazine. Then lastly the colour scheme for the contents page is the same colours as the front cover page so there is a theme through out the magazine to link it in with the magazine.

From Mrs S

Do the RMAs conform to the codes and conventions of the magazine and its genre?

On the front cover of Kerrang! the person covering for the magazine is Jared Leto who is the lead in the band “30 seconds to mars” the reason they may have him on the front cover is that he is the lead singer so he is probably the most well know out of the band which makes him a public eye cone, Also that the band is really big and as he is on the front cover that is probably going to be the main feature which you read in this magazine. Jared Leto is wearing what looks like a blazer which is grey black which gives the impression of punk and rock which they are obviously trying to come across as. The makeup which he looks like he is wearing is very pale and dull foundation which you put on the skin, along with the black eye liner which again shows instantly when you look at him that he is in a band and very rock like, along with his hair which looks straightened his hair is long again so you get the stereo typical punk rock band image straight away. The photo is portrait and is a medium close up as you can see mostly his face and partly some of his body which is his shoulders upwards. I also think that Photoshop has been used in this image as his eyes look very dull and grey which I think could be edited to give a gothic look. The way that this picture stands out to the target audience is that him in general gives the look of rock/gothic which this magazine is all about, the colours are typical dark colours which suggest rock also with the long straightened dark hair with the pale face all associates with the rock band look which is aimed at the target audience.

The logo isn’t very eye catching as you can hardly see it as the artist who is on the front cover is in front of the text, if you were to want to buy this for the first time you wouldn’t know if it was Kerrang! or not due to the poor visibility of not see half of the logo. They have tried to make it stand out by putting the first part of the logo in white on a red background which is a strong contrast and stands out along with the rest of the logo which is in black its originally colour for the logo on a white background also for a strong contrast to make it eye catching.

At the top right hand corner of the front cover there is a pug which in it says “Meet black veil brides!” the reason they have these pugs is to put chances to win prizes which attract the reader’s attention and wont to enter the competition it helps with the colours being different and stand out compared to the colours of the cover of the magazine.

The Title “30 SECONDS TO MARS” shows the name of the album that they are obviously going to talk about in the magazine it is in big capital letters to make it stand out and make it eye catching along with the contrast of colours used with the “30” and “to” in black on a white background gives it that eye catching feel they want to create.

Contents Page

The layout of the contents page for NME is very basic and easy to follow at the top it tells you straight away what the page is trying to do which is tell you what is in the magazine, then you have pictures that are placed around the page with a number in black with a white background which is a strong contrast to make it stand out and be seen the numbers are obviously to show the page number, it also has a shot caption underneath telling you what’s in it and the main headline of that page. It also states clearly the data of the magazine under the main heading. There are also different scales of images some are bigger than others such as the one in the middle of the page is larger than the others showing they are probably the most talked about thing in the magazine so they should stand out more. You then have the numbers of the pages at the bottom and centred in the middle to be easily seen.

The NME contents on the page is very limited as it just gives you brief description on what’s on particular pages that they thing the reader might like to know about it has a quotation of part of the article from that page and a little information to let you know what to expect to read on that page. The finally outcome is its quick and snappy to show you small detail which is big to make you want to read on and go straight to that page

These colours that are in the contents page are very dull dark colours which sets the theme of what you expect the magazine to be like throughout. The only main bright vibrant colours are in the advertisement at the bottom right hand corner which is bright for a reason to stand out and be seen against the strong contrast of dark colours so you instantly look at it as it’s an advertisement that’s the main thing they want you to do is make it eye catching.

Double Page Spread Anaylsis

On this double page spread of NME there is a picture of Noel Gallager the backing singer and songwriter for Oasis who were a very big band back in there day so the reason they have probably picked him to be the main part that you read in the magazine is because it stands out to a variety of people. Also by the way he is presented by what he is wearing such as pair of grey jeans with a grey shirt and a black leather jacket done up gives the instant look of what NME magazine are all about with the indie look. The appearance says a lot about a person and what the article might be about such as Noel Gallager hair is quiet a messy but swept to the side to show the punk look as they don’t really make a massive effort. Along with makeup it doesn’t look like he is wearing anything but if he was it would probably be a pale white foundation to make him look clean and fresh to appeal to the target audience. The shot in which the picture is taken is a long shot as you get the whole of his body in the image probably to show his body language from the way he is standing with his hands in his pockets and the other picture with him rubbing his chin he looks relaxed but maybe thinking about something which makes you want to know why he is posed like that. The way that the images represent the target audience is by using dull dark colours in which you referee to the indie rock look by which they have obviously made him wear for this photo.

All the colours that are used in this double spread magazine of NME are the same colour scheme to the one on the front cover as they obviously link in with the bright blue on the font that stands out with the white and light grey background which is a strong contract of colours which makes the “the world of god” stand out a lot more on the double page spread. The colours in which the guy is wearing are also very dark and bland which shows he is in a band or maybe an indie artist.

The language in this article is quiet in-formal as the when you read the article it is like he is reading it to you and he doesn’t address you by “I” making it not formal. The language used in the article as well as some as the captions is defiantly aimed at teenagers and 25 upwards because it has some language which teenagers would use and you wouldn’t find in adult magazines so they are two completely different types of magazines in way of how the language comes across.

For this double page spread the house style links in well with the front cover as it has the same colour scheme of the light blue, black and grey which all link in well. Along with that the picture of the guy showing a long shot to get the full picture of what the guy looks like dresses like so you can get an overall opinion on what kind of genera of music he might be into.

The way the column layout is at the bottom of the page it spreads onto two pages which is quiet difficult to find were you left off as it doesn’t clearly show you where. Also the columns adjust to when they get near the picture of Noel Gallger like where the first columns is the columns follows the shape of his leg which is a good affect for this kind of magazine

Front Cover

The style of the NME magazine you can instantly tell that this is a gothic or indie magazine with the dull colours such as black and grey you then have the blue to lighten the magazine up a lot more and become more visual. The layout of the magazine is quiet ordered with the name and logo top left then slogans and captions underneath that with the main artist and main feature in the magazine with more little captions down the right side and final the barcode bottom right. The design in obviously to make Noel Gallger stand some people see him so he is centre of attention with the logo in bight bold black font to make it visible what magazine you are buying along with the quotations in light blue which is eye catching and you want to find out what has been said that why there in a light blue with a dark black shadow behind the font.

The picture is the artist Noel Gallger who is a big artist and well recognized from song writing and backing singer in Oasis which was a massive band. So by putting him on the front of NME magazine make good promotion also he is the main feature in this magazine article he will be the main story on what he has to say about what he is talking about. In the picture he is wearing a leather jacket which is black and what looks like a grey shirt underneath the leather jacket and final you can see the top half of his grey jeans these are typical indie clothes leather jackets indicates rock and shirts and jeans which are worm casually indicate indie style. I don’t think from what I can see of the picture of Noel Gallger is that he is wearing any makeup but if there was something it would most probably be pale foundation to suit his skin and make him look perfect to make him stand out and look attractive. His hair looks very indie a bit messy look to show he still is rock and roll maybe just to make the reader think. The shot of him is a medium shot you can see over half his body the way he is standing which is turned slightly to the left makes him look narrower I think they have done this to be able to fit everything they need so it is tightly spaced. The way this links into represent the target audience is by showing Noel Gallger in this indie look which the magazine is all about and that links in well with the readers.

The colours which are sued on the front cover of this magazine are very basic plain colours you have the blacks and the light greys which link in well with the rock indie look which NME as a magazine are all about then you have that bright bit of colour the blue which lightens the front cover up a lot so that it is more recognized to the target audience. The main bits that you want to read about are in blue to stand out on the white background along with the black shadow which all fits into the indie them of dark dull colours.

The logo NME which is in big bold font to stand out and be recognized in black as well is shown like this to be eye catching and noticeable for the target market to remember easily.

On the right hand side of the front cover you will see captions in which gives you either an artist of something in the magazine which you can find along with that it has small bit of detail below it so gives you a little taster of what is inside the magazine and hopefully draws your attention and makes you want to read more. They do this by using either formal language to persuade you to read on or giving you short information that’s detailed and interesting to make you want to read more.

Miss D

Well done on getting these results up- have some anlysis as to what they reveal to you to help with planning your own product- what do you need to take into account?

Pie Charts:

For the first question that I asked from my questionnaire was “are you male or female” from the questionnaire I found that there were more males that answered my questionnaire compare to female.

I then thought I would find the age group that answered my questionnaire to see if it would reflect the following answered they gave throughout the questionnaire. From the pie charts I found that the majority of people who answered my questionnaire where age from 10 to 20 showing that more teenagers answer the questionnaire compared to adults, the oldest age group to answer my questionnaire was 50 to 60 year old's no one from 60 and above answered my questionnaire.

I then started to ask the public about the music magazine and the question I then asked was weather “ do you buy music magazines” from the pie chart results I found that most people buy music magazines and only a small amount of people don’t buy music magazines.

I then moved on to asking my target audience weather or not they buy music magazine from what I have found out from the pie charts it seems that the the majority of the people I have asked do buy music magazine.

I then asked them if so how many times a month do you buy a music magazine, most people said they buy them monthly then the next one was rarely every, then followed by weekly then every other week. This is show that people do not buy music magazines on a regular basis they probably subscribe to get them every month as that is what has the majority of votes from my results.

I thought I would then ask where do they buy the music magazines, the vast amount of people answered the local store such as (tesco, sainsburys, corner shop) this shows that this is probably the most popular place to buy music magazines compared to the others with less votes such as HMV, WhSmiths and online so these places are least likely to find a lot of people buying music magazines from them.

What Makes you buy a music magazine?
For this question I gave the audience a choice to write there own a opinion to get a variety of different answers. A lot of people said for this question new music is what makes them music magazines so I will have to import that into my magazines along with artist that they know and respect and want to know about there lifestyles was what other people said so maybe doing interviews and having big artists on the front cover might be a good choice. Then finally people said they would like to see promos for different tour dates, gigs when there on and the line ups and finally pictures draw some readers in and make them want to see more along with the language used on the front cover.

I then thought I should see what is the most popular type of music that people listen to today to see what music magazines would be a lot more successful then others so I asked the question what type of music do you perfere and I gave them the choices R&B,Rock,Indie,Jazz,POP, Other people proffered Pop which came out the most preferred out of all of the music types the one with the least votes was Rock which obviously isn't the most liked out of all the music types meaning a rock magazine wouldn't be as big as maybe a Pop magazine as the target audience wouldn't be as big.

I then wanted to know what music magazine everyone was buying so I gave them a variety of answers which were NME, Blitz, Kerrang!, Offbeat, Vibe, Smash Hits and other from the pie chart it shows that Vibe was the most popular out of all the magazine brands and the next biggest magazine is Kerrang! the one which is least liked or brought was Offbeat.

I thought ask we have found out what magazines they like to buy and where from I thought I should ask what they like to see in a magazine so I gave them a serious of answers and as you can see clearly from the pie charts the public said they look for new music over all the other options the one with the lost amount of votes was artist lifestyles they didn't really think this was that interesting so I wouldn't be putting any of that into a music magazines as it isn't a popular subject.

I then asked the audience where they buy music singles or albums on weather they saw them in a music magazine and the answer was yes the majority of people who see new music in magazines mostly go off and buy it only a small amount of people do not do this so I will add new music into my music magazine.

I was wondering why people buy certain magazines and its all about the appearance of the magazine and the front cover which attracts the reader so I asked what do you expect to see on the front cover of a music magazine and they said big artist that was the most favoured option of them all so for my front cover of the music magazine I shall have a big artist starting on the front cover and follow by having them on the double page spread. Then finally the one with the least votes was promos that's what the public didn't really look for on the front cover a magazine.

For this question a lot of the people said that they would buy a music magazine due to there being a large well known artist on the front cover, so when I come to design my front cover I shall make sure that I put an artist on there that is popular and a public eye con.

I then followed that last question to asks would the public like to have new and big artist interviews in a music magazine and the majority of people said yes they would so I could quiet easily import this into my magazine to make it more appealing and appeal to a wide variety of the public audience.

Then asked the audience would they to have a mixture of tow different musics coming together such as R&B and indie into one magazine and only a few people said yes more then no so I think this question is very love or hate so I probably wont import this into my music magazine .

I then asked the finally question to what colours would stand out the most on the front cover the two favourites where gold and white which are quiet strong and vibrant colours that is why they are probably the most favourite the least favourite is purple. So I will probably have to go on those two colours to make my front cover stand out and be recognized.
